This is a fun one this week! 😄

I think we’ve all had the experience where we walk into our garden and see that something has been noshing on the leaves! 😖

Spotting the Culprit: Slugs in Your Garden

Sometimes, you have to turn the leaf over to see the problem. There’s the culprit, a slug!! Slugs are particularly a problem during wet times.

One or two are manageable, but as the wetness continued and the populations increased, they weren't hiding or coming out just at night. They were taking out my Comfrey! That was the last straw! Time for action.

A Simple and Fun Solution

Time for the beer! I put out bowls with beer and in an hour, they were coming up to the bar. 😜

We would kid about them having a party at night when the bowls became fuller. We think they were getting drunk and drowning. Sometimes, they were right on the edge out of the water, but when I would touch them it seemed like they were passed out and I would push them in.

I put three bowls of beer in each of three 8' beds. The first time I did this, I used my favorite beer, Killian's, 😕 and it worked. I left it in for a few days and the bowls continued to collect more bugs, so they were either trying to join their friends or save them.

I didn't want to share my favorite beer anymore, so I got some cheap beer for the bugs. I changed the bowls every three days or so. We think they liked the Killian's better, but too bad! The beer attracted different kinds of slugs and bugs. We think at least they died happy.

When Beer Alone Isn’t Enough

Although the beer was working quite well, with the wet season the pests appeared to be producing or coming into the area quicker than beer alone could manage them. They were destroying some plants beyond the point of regenerating, so I needed to use another option.

I purchased the product Corry's Slug and Snail Killer because it says it’s safe around pets and wildlife and it also indicates it is ideal for vegetable gardens up to and including the day of harvest. This appeared to be able to keep up with the influx of pests that outnumbered the capacity of the beer, and also got the ones that decided to keep things alcohol-free.

A Happy Ending for the Plants

The plants are re-growing, and two out of six comfrey have survived and are going to make it, hallelujah! 🎉

To sum it up, when I go through wet periods, I will put out beer and attract them to their demise first. If this does not control them, then I will use the Corry's Slug and Snail Killer to keep the plant destruction from going too far.
